“We’ve weathered price hikes before—but this one’s different.”
If you work in distribution, contracting, or procurement, you’ve likely already heard about the
reinstatement of Section 232 tariffs on steel and aluminum imports—and this time, copper is on the list too.
At MSI, we’ve been through enough market cycles to recognize when something is temporary noise… and when it’s a structural shift.
This is a structural shift. Prices aren’t just rising—they’re recalibrating. And the way we source, plan, and protect customer pricing is changing with it.
What Are the 2025 Tariffs?
In February, the current administration reinstated tariffs under Section 232, citing national security concerns over U.S. reliance on foreign metals:
- 25% on steel
- 10% on aluminum
- New copper import restrictions (a major surprise for many)
These changes affect core product lines like forged stainless steel fittings and flanges, carbon steel nipples, bronze valves, malleable iron, cast aluminum, and more.
For some categories, list prices will jump 20–25% in the coming months.
Which Products Are Impacted?
Product Category | Expected Increase |
---|---|
Forged Stainless Steel Fittings & Flanges | 20% – 25% |
Carbon & Stainless Nipples | 10% – 15% |
Bronze & Brass Fittings, Valves | 7.5% – 25% |
Cast Aluminum Fittings | 20% – 25% |
Malleable Iron | 10% – 12% |
A105 Carbon Forged Fittings | 20% – 25% |

Why Copper Matters Now
Everyone expected steel and aluminum to be affected—but copper has become a new curveball. The White House recently designated copper a
critical national security material, and with demand from EVs, energy, and defense rising fast, global copper prices are up
over 30% year-over-year.
Products impacted include brass valves, bronze fittings, and red brass nipples—categories now facing the same pricing pressures as stainless and carbon steel.
